The following is a list of clothing and equipment that will allow you to get the most out of your stay at Sierra Outdoor School. We suggest that you plan to bring a sleeping bag, and one suitcase or a duffel bag. Be certain to bring these with you on the day you come to Sierra Outdoor School. All clothing and property should be labeled with the owner's name and school. Please bring your older clothing that you don't mind getting dirty. Temperatures can fluctuate. This is Outdoor Education so be prepared to learn in the outdoors whether it is sunny, raining, or snowing!

Essential Items

  • Sleeping bag or sheet and blanket
  • Pillow
  • Jeans or long pants
  • Shirts (at least one with long sleeves)
  • Underwear
  • Socks
  • Pajamas
  • Hiking boots or shoes with laces (waterproof recommended)
  • Jacket (waterproof recommended)
  • Heavy sweater with hood
  • Toiletries to include: comb, soap for showering (soap dispensers are provided for handwashing in the sink area, but there is no soap provided in the shower area) in plastic container or bag, shampoo, 1 bath towel, 1 wash cloth, toothbrush and toothpaste, facial tissues, chap stick, and sunscreen (non-aerosol)
  • 1 bag for wet or dirty clothes

Class Supplies

  • Reusable Water bottle
  • Pencils and sharpener (you will be given an SOS journal upon arrival)
  • Backpack

Optional Items

  • Disposable camera
  • Flip-Flops/Sandals for showering
  • Money for SOS Store and vending machine (single dollar bills only for vending machine)
  • Hat
  • Flashlight (note: only red light flashlights will be allowed on Night Hike)

IMPORTANT FOR OCTOBER-MAY

We will be OUTSIDE for class even in rain and snow. Please bring a full extra set of clothing, socks, shoes, gloves, and jacket to change into after other clothing gets wet. Layers are great in cold weather—it snows or rains here in the fall, winter, and spring!

  • Raincoat, poncho, or large plastic garbage bag for rain protection
  • Rain and/or snow pants
  • Gloves, scarf, and hat for cold weather
  • Rainboots, hiking boots, or multiple pairs of shoes
  • Lots of socks

Things to Leave at Home

  • Excessive Snacks and Candy - Food is not allowed in the dorms because it attracts pests. The only food you need to bring is a picnic lunch upon arrival.
  • Sports Equipment - We provide basketballs and volleyballs to play with on the blacktop during recess. We do not have the space for other sports to be played safely, so please leave things like footballs, soccer balls and frisbees at home.
  • Electronics - Aside from a disposable camera, there is no reason to bring any electronics to camp. They will distract from the experience, and the possibility of things getting lost or broken is not worth it!
  • Aerosol Products - Aerosol products like sunscreen, bug spray, and deodorant pose a safety risk for all the other students and adults on campus (not to mention they're bad for the environment). Because you'll be in close quarters, please bring non-aerosol alternatives to these products if applicable.
