Sierra Adventure Program Night Activities
(All activities are 1 hour)
Astronomy/Star Lab
Star Watch
Learn to locate and
identify seasonal constellations! Our staff will oversee the use of telescopes
to view the night’s highlights, including the moon, star clusters, galaxies,
nebulae, and planets. The daytime class, "Astronomy"
is recommended as
a complement to Star Watch. (1 hour)
Campfire
Led by the
visiting leader/teacher, the Campfire is a great time for reflection on the
day's activities and personal growth that has taken place. It is also a great
time for songs and stories. If needed, we will provide suggestions and
ideas. (1 to 2 hours)
Night
Hike
Head into the forest at dusk to learn about nocturnal animals and become more
comfortable in the dark. Along the way we’ll stop for sensory activities,
experiments, and stories. (1 hour)
True Colors
Everyone has a brightest color, depending
on their personality. This class has the students analyze
their preferences and ways of operating based on a simple
test, then lets them know their color (strongest personality
type). They learn how to better understand themselves, as
well as how to better understand where other color types are
coming from. This tends to promote greater tolerance and
better interrelationships, especially as students experience
the Sierra Adventure Program together. (1 - 1.5 hours)
Leadership This
class was adapted
from the Fresno County Office of Education Leadership Academy. Students learn the four stages of leadership as well as the three
"R's" (respect, responsibility, and resourcefulness). They also learn the
three "F's" (fun, and failing forward). Practice leadership skills
through various team-building activities. (1 - 1.5 hours)
