Rock Climbing Students learn technical rock climbing, progressing at their own speed,
and gradually learn the fundamentals of climbing movement such as balance,
strength, and agility. Classes will cover knots, rope systems, signals,
belaying, and rappelling. Various rock climbing locations are available. (5
hours - one
day)Kayaking Even beginners will enjoy a day of paddling
on either Pinecrest Lake or New Melones Reservoir. We begin with a lesson, and
soon the whole group is easily paddling around on the flat water lake in
two-person kayaks. Water safety is emphasized and PFD's are worn at all times.
Mountain Biking
Off-site mountain biking takes place
on the stunning trails alongside the New Melones Reservoir. The class will begin
with basic bike operation and safety. The focus is on developing safe and environmentally
conscious biking techniques. All routes are geared to
beginning and intermediate skill levels. (4 hours - 1
day)
Backpacking Students
learn the fundamentals of back-country travel, including safety and hazard
evaluation, minimum impact camping techniques, and route selection. California's
rugged Sierra mountain ranges are rich in natural and cultural history. Students
will be transported to a National Forest trailhead, and environmental science
concepts will also be taught along the way. Also emphasized are group relations
and leadership. Backpacking trips are one night only.
Overnight Camping
An alternative to backpacking is overnight camping
in the National Forest, in an area reachable by vehicles. Group
leaders may choose from many possible National Forest campgrounds
(extra fees required). Similar concepts to the backpacking trip will
be taught, with an emphasis on safety and minimum impact camping.
Leadership and group relations are an integral part of these trips.
Activities during the day can include nature hikes, mountain biking, wilderness
skills, and rock climbing (see Sierra Adventure
Program Day Classes). These will take place in areas near the campground.
